The purpose of Field Observation FO is to provide meaningful learning experiences for pre-service educators in accordance with state mandated guidelines for teacher preparation. Through Field Observation, students should have an opportunity to: Observe best practices and techniques for effective classroom management Connect theory with practice Obtain assistance in career decisions Develop personal skills and values The School District requires that all students placing in the public schools have a Level 2 Security Badge labeled "Student Teacher". Charter, private and out-of-county public schools may have separate security requirements.
The process for the student observer is as follows: Step 1 - Student Orientation Palm Beach State faculty member explains the Field Observation process to student, including requirements of the assignment and expectations of the faculty member for student to satisfy the assignment.
Step 2 - Selection of Observation Venue Student can complete their Field Observation in a public school setting, a charter school setting, a private school setting or another setting approved by the course instructor.
Once the student determines this, they will follow the rest of the field observation process. These forms should be filled in completely, printed out and signed. You can also prepay for the screening by credit card online. Cash or checks are not accepted. Results will be mailed to the student in approximately 10 business days in the form of a student security badge or a letter outlining any problem that has been found.
The student will need to follow the directions provided by the Field observation report School Police as to whether or not they will be allowed to appeal the decision in the case of a problem. Martin County Public School Placements Step 3B - Observation Clearance in an Alternative Classroom Location Charter Schools, Private Schools or Other County Venue Students who chose to complete their field observation in a location other than a SDPBC public school, will need to contact that location contact information available under Other Field Observation Placement Opportunities for placement availability, obtain course instructor approval to use this location for field observation and meet the security requirements of the location.
A copy of the School District Level 2 Badge must indicate "Student Teacher", Martin County Security Letter or a signed permission memo for charter or private school venues is attached to the placement request.
The coordinator will submit the Palm Beach or Martin County public school request to the Department of Professional Development Placement Office weekly throughout the semester. Placement notification is done to the student via student PBSC email and will take approximately 10 week days. Placement requests for charter or private school or some other venue are recorded and an email confirmation is sent to the student with a copy to the course professor.
Students requesting placement at a venue not listed on the Other Field Observation Opportunities site will need to have their instructor's authorization and written approval from the placement site before beginning field observation. Step 5 - Reporting For Assignment Students placed in SDPBC public schools 3A should contact the assigned school and report for their placement assignment as directed by email notification.
At that time, public school placement students will print out and sign three release forms included in their notification email that will be turned into the school representative along with a copy of their security badge. These forms will be kept on file at the placement school for the School District see the Appendix of the Student Guide and the Field Observation Forms Link for details of these forms.
Students will need to have the designated SDPBC classroom teacher sign off on their field observation log each time they observe. Students placed in other venues will need to follow the security procedure and sign in process of that location.
For charter, private and other observation assignments, the student is also required to have the classroom teacher sign off on their field observation log each time they observe.
Students will need to check with their instructor for the last day they may turn in the field observation logs, assignments, and any other required documentation.
